Medium-density fiberboard, particleboard and plywood are three types of human-made boards that have a wide range of uses and have a certain degree of substitution. So what’s the different between them? Which kind of board is more suitable for you?
Today we gonna discuss this questions.
DIFFERENCE OF THE OUT LOOK
Above picture show us clear about the outlook of the boards.
MDF Board: The out look of MDF Board with no pattern, it’s very smooth. Because MDF panels made from wood fiber.
Particle Board: Rough surface, side is clearly show the coarse particles. Particle Board made with wood chip and particles.
Plywood: Wood grain on the upper and lower surfaces as the plywood is made of nature wood veneer, the layers can be clearly seen on the side.
DIFFERENCE OF THE MATERIAL & PROCESS
This is a very big topic, which we will not discuss details today. Here just brief introduce and list it.
MDF Board: Grind wood or plants into fibers, add reagents, and press under high temperature and pressure. Because of the uniform particle size distribution, it has good post-processing properties.
Particle Board: Different with MDF Board, it’s made with small wood piece but not fiber.
Plywood: Generally, the logs are cut into large veneers in the direction of annual rings , and the odd-numbered layers are laminated and glued. After drying and coating, the blanks and glued boards are assembled according to the principle that the direction of the wood grain of the adjacent veneer layer is perpendicular to each other. The outermost front veneer is called the panel, the back is called the backboard, and the inner layer is called the core board.
DIFFERENCE OF THE PERFORMANCE
ADVANTAGE | DISADVANTAGE | |
MDF BOARD | 1. It is easy to carry out the finishing process. Various coatings and paints can be evenly coated on the density board, which is the preferred substrate for paint effects; 2. The surface is smooth and flat, and the color is natural and even. Materials such as veneer, adhesive film, decorative panel, light metal sheet, melamine board can be glued on the surface of MDF; 3. The hard density board can be made into sound absorbing board after punching and drilling. It is used in the decoration project of the building. It has excellent physical properties, uniform material and no dehydration problem. 4. Bending strength and impact strength are better than particleboard
| 1. Poor moisture resistance and easy to absorb moisture (BUT have moisture barrier MDF) 2. weak nail grip
|
PLYWOOD | 1. Light weight, clear lines, insulation, high strength, not easy to deform. 2. Convenient construction, should not be warped, and the mechanical properties of cross-strand tensile are good.
| 1. Generally high cost. 2. The plywood is not as smooth as the surface of the MDF. When the plywood is used as the base layer, the fireproof board, aluminum-plastic board, and other decorative boards are not adhered to the surface.
|
PARTICLE BOARD | 1. Good sound absorption and sound insulation performance. 2. Good horizontal bearing capacity. 3. The surface is flat, the thickness error is small, and it is resistant to pollution andaging. It can be used for paint and various veneers. 4. cheap.
| 1. It is easy to cause toothy phenomena when cutting boards, so some processes require high processing equipment and are not easy to be produced on site. 2. Extremely poor intensity. Generally not suitable for larger or mechanically required furniture. 3. the interior is granular structure, not easy to mill. 4. The edges are rough and easy to absorb moisture. The edge banding process is very important, and the moisture will deform.
